Gypsy and traveller accommodation assessment

The Burnley and Pendle Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment (GTAA) forms a key part of the evidence base for the Local Plan. The report sets out the need for the provision of sites, pitches and related services for the Gypsy and Traveller community in Burnley and Pendle.

What's happening next?

The Burnley and Pendle GTAA was completed in August 2012 and is available to view in the Documents to download section below.

The study will be used when preparing policies for inclusion in the Local Plan and may be updated in the future as and when required.

What have we done so far?

A Lancashire wide Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment was prepared in 2007.

In 2012 new national guidance was published by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) on Planning policy for traveller sites. This new guidance along with changes being made to the planning system through the Localism Act 2011 and the National Planning Policy Framework required the GTAA to be updated. Burnley and Pendle Borough Councils commissioned Salford Housing and Urban Studies Unit (SHUSU) to carry out an update to the Lancashire Study for the Burnley and Pendle areas.
