Home Upgrade Grant (HUG)

New help to reduce energy bills

Do you need a HUG to make your home warmer? The new Home Upgrade Grants or HUG2s are now available. They can help to cut the cost of energy bills by up to £200 a year, by improving insulation and installing lower cost clean eco-friendly heating. The grants are designed for:

You can apply for a grant whether you rent or own your home.

Landlords have to pay a contribution.

What will the grant pay for?

The grant will pay for energy efficiency measures like:

  • wall, loft, roof and underfloor insulation
  • new low-carbon heating systems, thermostats and room heating controls 
  • new doors and windows
  • solar rooftop panels
  • installation of eco-friendly air source heat pumps

Do I qualify for a grant?

You will meet the criteria if:

  • you live within a qualifying postcode area or have a household income of less than £36,000
  • your home does not have central heating installed or you live in an area off the gas supply grid, and you rely on bottled gas or oil to heat your home
    • (If your property has an old gas boiler that is not working, and you are using another form of heating you may meet the criteria.)
  • your property has an Energy Performance Certificate of D,E,F or G. Check your home Energy Performace Certificate on gov.uk.
