Climate Change
Climate Myths Busted
Don’t fall for myths! Climate change can be confusing — with so much information (and misinformation) out there, it’s easy to get the wrong end of the stick. Let’s clear the air and tackle some of the most common myths head-on.
“The climate has always changed.”
Yes, but not like this. Natural shifts happen slowly over thousands of years. The rapid warming we’re seeing today is happening over decades — and it’s driven by human activity. 17 of the 18 hottest years on record happened since 2001.
“It’s cold today — global warming must be a hoax.”
Weather isn’t the same as climate. Even with cold snaps, the Earth’s average temperature is rising. Climate change is making extreme weather — like storms, floods, and heatwaves — more intense and unpredictable, including right here in the UK.
“Climate change is a future problem.”
It’s already happening. We’re already seeing the impact on food supplies, migration, disease, and global stability. Scientists say we must act now to keep warming below 1.5°C and avoid the most dangerous consequences.
“The UK is too small to make a difference.”
Every action counts. The UK has one of the highest historical carbon footprints. Local action — in Pendle and beyond — supports national goals and sends a strong message to bigger polluters worldwide.
“Electric cars are just as bad as petrol ones.”
Electric vehicles are cleaner over their lifetime. They produce fewer emissions overall, especially as the electricity grid shifts to renewable energy.
“Only governments and big companies can solve this.”
You play a vital role too. From how you travel to what you buy — your choices matter. People power creates pressure and drives policy change. Find out the small steps that you can take that have a big impact.
