Think F.I.R.S.T
False or misleading information often spreads through social media, messaging apps and online forums. While misinformation is not new, digital technology allows it to reach large audiences quickly.
When reviewing information online, use the F.I.R.S.T. check:
F - Fabrication
Has any part of the content been made up, altered or manipulated?
I - Identity
Who created the content? Check whether the source is genuine, trustworthy and clearly identified.
R - Rhetoric
Does the content use emotional language, exaggeration or arguments designed to provoke a strong reaction?
S - Symbolism
Are images, statistics or events being used in a misleading way to support a particular message?
T - Technology
Could technology, such as AI, image editing or video manipulation, have been used to create misleading content?
If something seems surprising, upsetting or too good to be true, take a moment to verify it before sharing.
