Green infrastructure

What is green infrastructure?

Green infrastructure (GI) is the term used to describe natural and semi-natural features found in and between our towns and villages. These can be trees on the street  and private gardens to parks, rivers, lakes and woodlands.

Why is green infrastructure important?

Green spaces are important in helping to:

  • reverse the decline in biodiversity
  • mitigate and adapt to climate change
  • support healthy lifestyles and improve our health and well-being
  • promote sustainable growth and development

The Pendle Green Infrastructure Strategy identifies our green assets and establishes a way to protect and enhance them through the planning system.

Local Green Space (a new planning designation) gives further protection to green spaces that are special to their local community.
