Pendle Rise demolition moves into next phase

The ageing 1960s shopping centre, bought by Pendle Borough Council in 2024 using Nelson Town Deal funding, is being demolished to make way for a new retail complex.

 

Large demolition machinery moved onto the site this week and work is progressing to pull down the former Pendle Rise building.

The demolition marks a significant step forward in plans to create a new and improved retail destination for Nelson.

The new shopping complex will include a major store, modern retail units and a new car park providing more than 150 spaces.

The plans also include landscaping and improved outdoor areas, helping to create a more attractive and welcoming part of the town centre.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “The demolition started a number of weeks ago internally so it’s fantastic that we can now see the building start to come down.

“After years of talking about the future of this site, people can now see real, physical change taking place in the heart of Nelson.”

The new retail development is being delivered through Penbrook, a partnership between Pendle Borough Council and Brookhouse, which is overseeing the project.

Mike Nuttall, Property Director at Brookhouse, said: “Pendle Rise has been part of Nelson for decades, but the building is now well past its best.

“Its demolition clears the way for a new complex that will provide a stronger retail offer, better parking and a much more attractive environment for residents, businesses and visitors.”

The demolition and construction programme will continue over the coming months.

Stephen Barnes, Chair of Nelson Town Deal Board, added: “This is a really important moment in the regeneration of Nelson town centre and we’re looking forward to seeing the project progress over the coming months.”

The project is a key part of the wider Nelson Town Deal programme, which is investing £25 million in projects designed to transform Nelson and support its future as a thriving town centre.
