Work will start on the land off Edge End Avenue and Halifax Road this Spring.

At a meeting of the Executive last Thursday, Pendle Borough Councillors agreed to appoint Biba's Landscapes Ltd to develop the site, subject to satisfactory completion of due diligence.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Deputy Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “It’s great that we are moving forward with this vital facility, which will ensure there is sufficient burial space in Pendle to meet future needs.

“The contractor was chosen after being able to demonstrate they could meet our specification, which includes everything from the engineering works through to the final landscaping of the site, and deliver it within the Council's budget.”

The work will include the development of an access road, internal roadways, drainage, landscaping and the creation of pedestrian routes within the cemetery site.

It is anticipated that phase 1 will provide up to 2,085 burial plots and 600 memorial areas.

When completed, the 6.3 hectare site will provide space for around 4,500 graves, ash internment areas, ornamental planting and spaces for memorial trees, as well as car parking.

Councillor Mohammad Hanif, Pendle Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Health and Leisure Services, added: “This is a much-needed facility with Nelson’s current cemetery nearing capacity and will be created to benefit the whole community.”
