A total of 11 residents and 1 business in Pendle have been fined a combined sum of £8,208.09 for storing waste in the rear yards of their property.

The offenders were from Brierfield, Nelson and Colne.

A Section 80 Notice of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 was issued to each of them for storing rubbish, which was causing environmental issues and providing a detrimental effect on the area.

All cases were referred to Preston Magistrates Court and were heard in their absence.

The £8,208.09 was made up of £2,676 in fines, £4,462.09 in enforcement costs and £1,070 in victim surcharges.

Councillor Zafar Ali, Pendle Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing and Customer Services, said: “The Council provides regular waste and recycling collection services, and we ask that residents and businesses use them rather than leaving their rubbish piled up in their back yards, causing environmental issues and providing a detrimental effect on the area.

“The number of prosecutions show how hard our enforcement officers are working to improve the local environment – and the level of prosecutions show how seriously the courts deal with offenders.”
