Pendle YES Hub has played a key role in helping a young man build confidence, expand his social opportunities, and prepare for long-term employment.

The Hub – based in Nelson - is managed by Active Lancashire and Positive Action in the Community on behalf of Pendle Borough Council. It offers free support and training to 16–24-year-olds to help them gain confidence and employment.

After completing a year-long Supported Internship with Asda, Zain Qureshi was referred to the Hub for continued support. Since then, he has grown in confidence, strengthened his skills, and is now thriving in a new role as he works towards his career goals with a clearer sense of direction and purpose.

At the YES Hub, Zain engaged in a wide range of activities designed to strengthen his personal and professional development. He began by taking part in recreational sessions where he enjoyed playing pool, table tennis and FIFA.

These activities provided him with a relaxed environment in which to meet new people and grow in confidence, as well as help him to develop teamwork and communication skills in an informal and enjoyable setting.

Zain took part in the Hub’s Summer Activity Series, participating in a range of activities, including axe throwing, air rifle shooting, archery and arts and crafts.

Shunem Shamshad, Youth Engagement Worker at Pendle YES Hub, said: “I’m incredibly proud of the courage Zain has shown during his time with us. When he first came to the Hub, he was quite shy and lacked confidence. By giving him a calm, welcoming space to relax and connect with other young people, we gradually saw him come out of his shell and start believing in himself.

“He’s really stepped outside of his comfort zone, and I think the Bradley Big Local Summer Activity Series gave him the boost he needed to challenge himself and feel confident enough to take that next step into employment.”

Today, Zain is more confident, socially connected and has gained employment with Asda.

His journey shows how a combination of practical work experience, social engagement and tailored support can help young people transition successfully from supported education into the world of work.

Pendle YES Hub is open Monday to Friday for anyone aged 16 - 24 living in Pendle and the surrounding areas. All activities and support services are free of charge and designed to be inclusive and accessible for all abilities.
