Joint initiative results in crackdown on environmental crimes in Nelson

A joint initiative between Pendle Borough Council and the local Police has resulted in a significant crackdown on environmental crime and anti-social behaviour in Nelson.

Operation Prosper

 

As part of Operation Prosper, the Council’s Environmental Crime Team and Nelson Police spent a day of action in Bradley Ward, which resulted in a number of enforcement actions being carried out.

The high-impact initiative showcased a powerful collaborative approach to improving community safety and the local environment.

The Council’s Environmental Crime Team:

  • Issued 13 notices for backyards full of rubbish
  • Issued eight warning letters for back yards full of rubbish
  • Issued 55 notices for bins left out on the highway
  • Issued one notice for a skip obstructing a back street
  • Cleared 2.96 tonnes of illegally dumped waste from public areas
  • Collected evidence from four fly-tipping incidents which could potentially lead to convictions
  • Placed notices on four suspected abandoned vehicles
  • Carried out two business waste Duty of Care checks

Officers from Nelson Police also seized 21 vehicles during the operation and issued 28 tickets for unnecessary obstructions caused by vehicles.

Councillor David Whipp, Leader of Pendle Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Community Safety and Engagement, said: “The results from this operation are a testament to the effectiveness of our partnership with the Police and our efforts in enhancing environmental standards and community safety.

"By combining our resources, we were able to deliver a clear message that fly-tipping, littering and other environmental offences will not be tolerated in Pendle."

Sergeant Carl McCoy from Nelson Police added: “We will continue to work closely with our local partners and community to regenerate the areas that have been blighted by anti-social behaviour.

“We are dedicated to improving our community, making it a safer place to live, work and visit.

“We urge the local community to tell us about the concerns they have so that we can work to combat them.”
