Targeted events to take place to encourage responsible disposal of unwanted household waste

Following a very successful campaign in the borough last year, Pendle Borough Council will again be carrying out targeted events to encourage the responsible disposal of unwanted household waste.

Rehome recycle dispose

Under the banner ‘Re-home – Recycle – Dispose’ residents in designated areas of Brierfield, Nelson and Colne will be given the opportunity to donate or dispose of their unwanted items.

On selected dates in July and August, Pendle Borough Council will be providing a large skip and a refuse collection vehicle with staff on-hand to safely dispose of any unwanted household goods – whatever their condition – whether they can be re-homed, recycled or need throwing away.

A team from Pendleside Hospice will also be joining staff looking for any ‘as good as new’ items they can sell in their retail stores to raise money for the local charity.

Residents in the allocated areas will be notified in advance via a flyer through their letterbox with details of the date, time and location.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Deputy Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “There has been a significant increase in the level of fly-tipping incidents in Pendle over the last few years.

“We need to tackle this problem head-on and this campaign is one way of doing it.

“Investigations show that fly-tipping is more prominent in terraced housing areas where there are high levels of rented properties with a high turnover of residents, and these are the areas we are concentrating on.”

David Walker, Pendle Borough Council's Assistant Director of Operational Services, said: “We will be helping residents to re-home, recycle or dispose of their unwanted household waste – whatever their condition.

“We will take items such as polystyrene packaging, which is commonly placed incorrectly in the blue bins, and anything that would be collected through the Council’s free bulky household waste service, such as furniture, televisions, bikes and carpets.

“This time we are also working with Pendleside Hospice who will be looking for items that are in good condition and can be sold in their retail stores.”

Councillor Mohammed Iqbal, the Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing and Customer Services, added: “This initiative aims to increase knowledge of both Pendle Borough Council and Lancashire County Council’s services and to educate residents on how to responsibly dispose of unwanted items and who to contact for help, rather than dumping their rubbish on the streets.”
