Pendle Borough Council’s fleet of recycling vehicles run on HVO.

And the fact is now proudly displayed with artwork on six of its recycling and garden waste wagons.

It is part of Pendle’s plans to become carbon neutral by 2030 and the Council leading by example.

Victor Equere, Pendle Borough Council’s Climate Programme Manager, said: “By switching from conventional fuel to HVO for some of our operational vehicles, we have achieved about a 90% reduction in the CO2 emissions from these vehicles at a lower cost than replacing them.

“This is a significant step towards decarbonising our fleet and operations.

“In celebrating this milestone, we are using advertising banners to create awareness of the carbon neutrality agenda that the Council has for Pendle and challenge our residents to play their part in making Pendle carbon neutral.

“Through these simple actions, together we can make a huge difference and make Pendle greener and safer for future generations.”

There are five different messages displayed on the recycling vehicles to encourage residents to do their bit:

- Use LED bulbs

- Take shorter showers

- Adjust your thermostat

- Unplug appliances when not in use

- Wash your clothes in colder water

David Walker, Assistant Director of Operational Services at Pendle Borough Council, added: “We hope that this example will inspire residents to find opportunities in their own daily lives to make simple changes that will also reduce their carbon footprint.

“As a Council we have a responsibility to reduce the carbon impact of the services we deliver each day.

“HVO provides a cost-effective way for the Council to reduce its fleet’s emissions and lower our impact on the local environment.”
