Seven locations in Nelson are set to be upgraded to make them more accessible and safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
Pendle Borough Council and Lancashire County Council will improve traffic flow and introduce better walking and cycling opportunities.

Lancashire County Council has started preparation ahead of an expected start date in May 2025 for the first scheme.
The start of work on the Sagar Street / Holme Street junction is being scheduled following completion of utilities work. Further details will be confirmed including any likely impact on travel in the area.
Accessible Nelson is one of seven projects part-funded by the £25m Nelson Town Deal – a 10-year plan for a brighter Nelson.
Funding has also been provided by Lancashire County Council and UK Government through Levelling Up East Lancashire and Active Travel funds.
Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “Accessible Nelson is all about transforming the town centre and improving routes into and through the town.
“Our aim is to extend the high-quality environment we already have in the heart of the town whilst making routes safer and more pedestrian and cycle friendly.
“By easing congestion to keep a steady flow of traffic we can create a better balance for all and reduce carbon emissions.”
Improvements will be made to the following routes and the first scheme to get underway will be the Sagar Street/Holme Street junction.
- Scotland Road and Liverpool and Leeds Canal gateway
- Scotland Road
- New Scotland Road
- Leeds Road / New Scotland Road junction
- Sagar Street / Holme Street junction
- Railway Street / Broadway
- Manchester Road junction
Stephen Barnes, Chair of Nelson Town Deal Board, added: “We’re delighted that work is set to begin.
“These improvements will create a better balance for everyone by widening footpaths and managing traffic, so it steadily flows through the town.
“By planting trees along the routes we’ll create greener and more attractive main gateways making for a more inviting town centre.”
County Councillor Aidy Riggott, Lancashire County Council cabinet member for economic development and growth, said:
"We're really pleased work is starting soon on Accessible Nelson and support this exciting new chapter for the town. The improvements will support growth in the local area, making the town centre more accessible and inviting, with more people spending time there."
