Warning over bogus collectors

‘Be careful who you donate to during Ramadan!’

Cllr Asjad Mahmood

That is the message from Pendle Borough Council following reports from several residents and local mosques who have experienced people knocking on their doors asking for donations.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “Giving to charity is a key part of Ramadan.

“But whilst charitable collections are a part of our society, only organisations with a license from Pendle Borough Council or registered with the Home Office Exemption, are permitted to collect donations.

“We are aware that some of those collecting are not authorised to do so – one of those being One World Humanitarian Relief.

“We would like to remind residents to be extra careful during Ramadan and not to give money to anyone turning up on their doorstep they do not know.

“Be careful of scammers and only donate if you are sure that those collecting are reputable and have a license to collect.”

Neil Watson, Pendle Borough Council’s Assistant Director of Planning, Building Control and Regulatory Services, added: “We are asking residents to be extra vigilant during this time and not to donate to unlicensed organisations.

“We are committed to working with the Charity Commission, Fundraising Regulator and the Police and will help deal with any individuals carrying out fraudulent actions.”

If you have any concerns, please contact the Police on 101 or report the matter to Pendle Borough Council’s Licensing Section at licensing@pendle.gov.uk
