The Hub, managed by Active Lancashire and Positive Action in the Community on behalf of Pendle Borough Council, offers free support and training to 16–24-year-olds to help them gain employment.

Harrison Oakley was referred by the Department for Work and Pensions, who felt the Hub had the tools to support his interpersonal skills and eventually help him gain employment.

Harrison attended gaming classes led by Lancashire Adult Learning, where he could connect with like-minded participants and overcome personal barriers, whilst achieving a Level 1 qualification in game design.

Alongside this, Harrison worked with the Hub’s Youth Engagement Worker Shunem Shamshad on his confidence and attended counselling sessions with Lancashire Mind to receive targeted support with his anxiety.

As the weeks progressed, staff at the Hub noticed Harrison’s increasing social skills and confidence.

Shunem said: “Harrison impressed everyone at the YES Hub with his willingness to step out of his comfort zone. He has also set a great example for other young people who struggle with anxiety that anything is possible if you are willing to take the first step.”

Harrison added: “The YES Hub is always a welcoming place and made me feel included. The staff are always so friendly and helpful.

“It really helped me get out of the house with activities and was a much more comfortable and safe setting for DWP appointments.

“It is honestly a really good project for a town and region that struggles with youth and unemployment, and even people who face extra difficulties like myself. It really made a difference with my interactions with people and the outdoors.”

With the support and provision Harrison was able to access at the YES Hub, he has now secured employment as a Trainee Infrastructure Engineer at DXC. This role marks a significant achievement for Harrison, showcasing his determination and resilience.

Harrison continues to access support from the YES Hub through its weekly physical activity sessions and free training opportunities.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council and Nelson Town Deal board member, added: “Getting young people into employment and training is a number one priority for Nelson Town Deal.

“Harrison is proof that initiatives like Pendle YES Hub really do help young people to overcome barriers when offered the right support.”

Pendle YES Hub is based at 39-41 Scotland Road, Nelson, BB9 7UT and is open Monday to Friday, 9am – 3.30pm.
