'Bin It - Don't Dump It' to keep Pendle tidy!

The loud and clear message from Pendle Borough Council is ‘Bin It – Don’t Dump it!’

Great British Spring Clean 24

This follows a two-week exercise last month as part of this year’s Great British Spring Clean campaign, when the Council’s Operational Services teams selected three areas of Pendle to monitor to see if their efforts would make a difference!

They concentrated on Nelson town centre, in front of the library in Brierfield and in front of the library in Colne.

The areas were cleaned and then monitored on a daily basis to see if they remained in the same clean condition - litter and gum free.

At the end of the week, the sites were again cleaned and the time and cost of the clean ups were recorded.

Michelle Walker, Senior Technical Officer for the Council’s Operational Services, said: “Although the sites remained far better than we expected, there was still evidence at all sites of cigarette and gum waste.

“What is hard to believe is the amount of gum and cigarettes we found at the side of bins and next to signs saying ‘bin your gum’!

“The cost of removing the waste at the end of the week was £158 per site.”

Phillip Spurr, Pendle Borough Council’s Director of Place, added: “We are conscious littering is an ongoing issue within Pendle and we were keen to use this national campaign to deliver some behavioural change messages to our communities.

“If people disposed of their litter correctly, it would save our time and money to spend on other projects within the borough.

“The message is clear – Bin It – Don’t Dump it!”
