Pendle Borough Council is backing the Great British Spring Clean campaign this month and encouraging local residents to take part.

Great British Spring Clean

Back for its ninth year, the Great British Spring Clean is the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign, with Keep Britain Tidy on a mission to improve public places, stop littering and educate future generations about waste.

This year, the big clean-up takes place 15 March to 31 March.

Individuals, community groups, schools and businesses can all organise their own events during these two weeks in their chosen areas.

Pendle Borough Council will provide litter bags and litter pickers – as well as gloves and hi-vis jackets - and collect all the litter at the end of each event.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “Keep Britain Tidy is asking people to be part of the litter pick and we’re keen to do our bit here in Pendle!

“We’re urging individuals, schools, organisations and local businesses to sign up and make a real difference.

“Although we do try to encourage people to not drop litter in the first place and dispose of it properly, residents still complain about litter and fly-tipping.

“But we don’t have the resources to clear it all up. We need support from local people if we’re to live in a clean, litter-free Pendle we can all be proud of.

“We have a fantastic community spirit and we need as many volunteers as we can get during this national spring clean.”

Councillor Zafar Ali, the Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Climate Change, added: “This year the message is that the environment belongs to everyone.

“Litter picking is a simple action that anyone can do. It makes an immediate and visible difference to the environment where we live, work and play.

“So, if you want to protect our wildlife and the places you love this spring, join the Great British Spring Clean and pledge to pick up a bag – or more.”

Anyone organising a litter picking event should register with Pendle Borough Council - email Michelle Cooney – michelle.cooney@pendle.gov.uk who can also help with equipment and risk assessments to ensure everyone keeps safe.
