Pendle makes key budget decisions and sets Council Tax

At the annual Special Budget Council meeting on Monday 26 February, councillors set the budget for Pendle for 2024/25.

Nelson Town HallPendle Borough Council agreed to raise its share of the Council Tax by 2.99%, which for Band D properties is £298.59, an increase of £8.67 for the year.

More than 60% of homes in Pendle are in Band A so this is an increase of £5.78 (11.1p per week) from £193.28 to £199.06.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “Our priority is to provide good quality services to local people, and we know that many of our residents continue to need our support.

“To do this we have increased our share of the Council Tax by 2.99%, the same percentage increase as last year, which is an extra £8.67 per year for a Band D property and £5.78 for Band A property.”

Councillor David Whipp, Deputy Leader of Pendle Borough Council, added: “It is with regret that we have to increase the Council Tax, but we are in this difficult financial position because of ongoing Government cuts.

“Our budget focuses on providing the services our communities rely on.

“It’s also about delivering the priorities in our Corporate Plan including providing good quality housing, responding to climate change, protecting our green spaces and keeping our streets clean.”

Key decisions made at the Special Budget Council meeting:

  • No charge for bulky household waste collections
  • No charge for replacement bins
  • Increase to fees and charges including pest control, environmental health, building control and land charges
  • Allocating £2m for energy conservation and essential works to repair and maintain the sports centres. 

Pendle Borough Council has balanced its books with no need to use reserves in 2024/25.
