Pendle residents offered access to free energy saving advice

Pendle residents are being offered access to free energy saving advice thanks to a new project being delivered by a local charity.

Councillor Asjad MahmoodNewground Together, a charity and part of the Together Housing Group, focuses on helping the local community through supporting people into employment, enhancing their skills, creating opportunities to thrive and engaging with the natural environment.

Its dedicated team is on hand to provide impartial and independent energy saving advice to help limit the impact of the current cost-of-living crisis and educate people on what they can do to reduce their carbon footprint.

From giving out handy tips, to supporting people to make big impact changes in their homes, the team is helping to make a difference after training with the UK’s leading fuel poverty charity National Energy Action.

Support can be provided in person in people’s homes, in community settings, at tailored workshops or even over the phone. Everyone who is supported receives some free energy saving goodies, too.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “This is another great way for us to be able to offer practical advice and support to our residents in these difficult financial times.”

The project, part of the charity’s wider Greener Together programme, is being delivered by Newground Together across the borough until March 2025, on behalf of Pendle Borough Council. This project has received £304,252 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which Pendle Council administrates.

Sharn Wightman, Newground Together’s Community Programmes Coordinator, said: “We know that so many people are struggling right now with the cost-of-living crisis. It’s heartbreaking to see so many people not putting their heating on because they can’t afford it.

“By just doing some simple things we can all cut down on the energy we use, which can make a big difference to bills and our impact on the planet. We want to get out and about to see as many people as we can to spread the word.

“Although our service is about energy, our teams will also be able to signpost people to relevant services to help with things like employment, training or budgeting.

“Working with our partners, we really hope this programme will make a positive difference to people’s lives and relieve some of the financial pressures they are facing.”
