The new recreational area in the Brunswick Street park has been created through the Healthy Town strand of the Town Deal project and will provide both play and fitness equipment for young people.

The decision to create a playground for older children follows a public consultation held last October, when residents were asked what they would like to see in place of the existing playground, which was in very poor condition following years of repeated vandalism.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council and Nelson Town Deal Board member, said: “I am really pleased that we now have something to offer teenagers in Nelson.

“This age group desperately needed somewhere to socialise. This park will provide them with a place to enjoy fresh air, meet with their friends and exercise at the same time.

“I hope they will be pleased with what we have provided for them and make good use of it.”

The new equipment, which will provide both play and fitness elements, includes an Activzone climber, chin-up and pull-up bars, a ladder wall and monkey bars, along with new surfacing and seating.

Councillor Zafar Ali, the Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment and Climate Change, as well as a member of the Town Deal Board and Chairman of the Finance Committee for Nelson Town Council, added: “This new playground is one of four being funded through the Nelson Town Deal as part of the Healthy Town project, along with another one for juniors at Walverden Park, one at Marsden Park and one at Victoria Park.

“Nelson Town Council is also contributing £250,000 over the period of the Town Deal towards the parks project and I think that level of funding is vital for the delivery of the project.”
