Historic Town Surveys

The Lancashire Historic Town Survey took place between 2000 and 2006.

It was part of a national programme looking at historical and archaeological features of 33 towns in Lancashire.

The surveys provide a comprehensive, rigorous and consistent baseline. The baseline is used in research, regeneration and land planning.

The surveys are a useful starting point for the preparation of local design codes. They describe the development of each town and the character areas that they can be divided into.

The surveys identify areas that need special management.
