Food hygiene inspections

Qualified food officers are required to carry out inspections of food businesses. Businesses are awarded a star rating based on their inspection.

You can search for Pendle food businesses on the Food Standards Agency's (FSA) food hygiene rating scheme website.

What do the food safety inspections look for?

Our food officers inspect all types of food businesses. They need to make sure food is being handled and produced hygienically and that it is safe to eat. They identify if there are any risks of food poisoning or injury.

They check:

  • the premises
  • the kinds of food being made or prepared
  • how the business works
  • the food safety management system being used

Low Risk Food Business

All food businesses are subject to a food hygiene inspection to assess compliance with the food hygiene regulations.

Businesses considered to be relatively low risk due to their nature, size, and activity are within the Category E Rating.

The Food Standard Agency (FSA) permits Category E rated businesses to use a questionnaire assessment  rather than conducting frequent inspections.
