The Mayor of Pendle is enjoying his role as the borough’s representative as he continues to be busy in the local community.

Merchant Navy Day flag raising

During the last three months, Councillor Brian Newman has been visiting and talking to those involved in numerous initiatives throughout the borough.

In September, he took part in a Merchant Navy Day Flag Raising Ceremony, saying: “It was an honour to meet with the veterans and to receive the Merchant Navy Day Flag from Michael Sutcliff, Armed Forces Support Group Chairman and a Navy veteran himself.”

The Mayor and Mayoress officially opened the new Curry On The Street Community Centre on Railway Street in Nelson – one of their chosen charities.

Their other charities include Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue, Burnley FC in the Community and The Autistic Society.

The Mayor has made a donation to each of the four charities in the first half of his Mayoral year.

In October, The Mayoress of Pendle, Mrs Lynne Newman, took part in a sponsored walk along the Pendle stretch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal to add to the contributions towards their chosen charities.

In November, The Mayor visited Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue where he learned his donation will go towards the cost of replacing some of their life-saving equipment which is due for replacement.

The Mayor said: “This is just a fraction of the activities I’ve participated in over the autumn months. It is an honour to highlight organisations that are doing a great job for the people of Pendle.”
