Website toolbar to help residents access information more easily

Pendle Borough Council is reminding local people that it has added translation, reading and speech support to its website to help residents access information more easily.

Reachdeck

Using the ReachDeck toolbar, the website can be translated into 99 languages, read out loud and the text altered for people who are visually impaired.

It helps a wider audience browse and access the Council’s online content and services in a way that suits them best, allowing visitors to personalise how they access information.

The toolbar is available on all pages of the website, whether you want information on recycling collections, want to pay a bill, view planning applications, report environmental health problems or read committee meeting reports and minutes.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “This toolbar makes it so much easier for residents. It breaks down barriers for people who have visual problems or may not speak English, to access the information they need.

“We want to make sure as many people as possible are aware of this function, so please help us spread the word.”

There are 11 different functions, including images used to help define words and another which creates an MP3 sound file to download and play on your MP3 player, smartphone or computer.

There is also a screen mask, which highlights a rectangular section of the screen to help people with some forms of dyslexia or learning difficulties and for those needing larger print, there is a text magnifier.
