An Accrington man was fined £710 in court after being found guilty of abandoning a vehicle in a Nelson street.

The case against Mr Tadas Zdanavicius was successfully brought to court by Pendle Borough Council and serves as a warning to others.

On 24 May 2022, a Seat Altea was reported as being abandoned on Poplar Street, Nelson. 

The vehicle was found to be in an unroadworthy condition with flat tyres, interior mould and tired body work. Checks on the vehicle showed that the Seat's MOT and road tax had expired.

As the registered keeper, Mr Zdanavicius, of Henry Street, Accrington, was fined £220, ordered to pay £340 costs and £150 compensation.

Councillor Nadeem Ahmed, Leader of the Council, said: “Abandoned vehicles are not only an eyesore, they can also become a danger to the public and we will not tolerate this in Pendle.”

David Walker, Environmental Services Manager, explained: 

“We acted on information provided to us about this abandoned vehicle straight away.

"We are pleased that after completing our investigation and having the expense of moving and storing the vehicle, this has led to a successful prosecution.

“We also warn anyone thinking of abandoning vehicles in Pendle that we will take action against them,” he stated.

This is the latest prosecution brought by the Council in a clampdown on littering, fly tipping and abandoned vehicles.

Earlier this month, five Nelson residents were found guilty in court for littering and dumping household waste, with fines totalling over £4,000.

In November, four more Pendle residents were issued with fines totalling over £2,400 for littering and dumping household waste on Nelson’s back streets.
