The Ukrainian flag will be flying over Nelson Town Hall on Ukraine Independence Day, Thursday 24 August, exactly18 months after Russia’s full-scale invasion.

It’s being raised to show the Council’s support to the Ukrainian people and marks 32 years since Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “We’re deeply saddened by the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

“We continue to stand with all those affected and we are proud to mark this important day to show our solidarity.

“Pendle has shown time and time again that we’re a community which can pull together and support others in times of need.

“Many have shown true community spirit and welcomed Ukranian families into their homes and communities.”

In total, 46 families have settled in Pendle since the Ukrainian Resettlement Scheme began and there are currently 28 households being sponsored in the borough.
