Have Your Say On Pendle’s Local Plan

Pendle Borough Council is preparing a new Local Plan and there is going to be a consultation so you can have your say!

The Local Plan is a Government required blueprint for future development in Pendle.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, explained: “This will be the document the Council will use to guide development and growth in the borough up to 2040.

“It will be used by Pendle’s Planning Officers to decide whether to approve or refuse applications for planning permission.”

The draft plan will be made up of almost 60 policies which will give applicants and developers information about the design features that will be expected of them, including making sure traditional features are retained in conservation areas.

A total of 12 sites across the borough have been selected for new housing, each of which have been chosen to try and avoid building on fields on the edges of towns and villages and instead re-use land that has previously been developed wherever possible.

The plan has been thoughtfully considered in a bid to protect Pendle’s history, heritage and natural environment so it can be enjoyed by future generations.

Councillor Mahmood added: “The public consultation will ensure the Local Plan is up-to-date with any sites potentially suitable for development.

“Planning affects all our lives – where we live, work and relax – so it’s vital that as many people as possible are given the opportunity to have their say and help shape our new Local Plan so that it meets our needs for the future. I would encourage everyone to engage in the consultation process.”

Councillor Tom Whipp, Executive Portfolio Holder for Planning, stressed: “The purpose of the Local Plan is to make Pendle a better place for residents and businesses, so it’s important that we work together to get it right.

“Our key challenge is balancing the need to provide new homes and employment opportunities with the need to protect the environment.”

Neil Watson, Assistant Director: Planning, Building Control and Regulatory Services, said: “The Local Plan takes into account a wide range of new evidence.

“Documents looking at Pendle’s need for new housing, the value of our natural environment and the potential impact of new development, will all be available alongside the Local Plan.

“All the comments we receive during the consultation will be carefully considered before our final draft is published.”

This is YOUR Local Plan and Pendle Borough Council want YOU to have your say, so make sure you look out for ways in which you can do this in the coming weeks.

Consultations will start on Friday 23 June 2023.
