Hot Weather Warning!

Be vigilant with your fridge – and its contents

With temperatures being unusually and unbearably high at the moment, Pendle Borough Council is warning businesses to be vigilant with their fridge – and its contents.

Please make sure you are following guidelines and staying within the law.

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “We’re urging businesses selling and producing food to take extra caution and make sure their refrigerators are at the right temperature for this weather.

“The last thing we want is to hear of people suffering from food poisoning.”

Here are a number of tips:

  • Keep your fridge on at all times
  • Reduce the amount of stock stored in your fridge
  • Make sure that high risk food takes priority over other food like salad and vegetables
  • Check the temperature of the display section of the fridge using a thermometer
  • Reduce the amount of times you open and close the fridge door
  • Check the temperature of your food

Jennifer Nelson, Environmental Health Officer, said: “It is an offence for anyone to sell or process food for sale which is harmful to health.

“Businesses must ensure their activities are carried out in a safe and hygienic way.

“These tips for storing food in hot weather will help with this, as well as provide residents with pointers to take on board too.”

Councillor Mohamad Ammer, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Health and Wellbeing, added: “When temperatures are higher than normal, it is important everyone follows this guidance to make sure they stay within the law.”
