Midsummer is just around the corner and Pendle Borough Council is rolling out giant eco garden waste recycling messages on bin wagons this week.

Around 8,000 gardeners are on the fortnightly green bin recycling scheme and the Council has been contacting people to sign up by Friday 9 June so they don’t miss any collections.

The current scheme ends on 30 June and the new scheme starts from Monday 3 July.

It’s easiest to pay online using a debit or credit card www.pendle.gov.uk/gardenwaste

And gardeners can also check on this webpage what can and can’t be recycled in the green bin.

“If you’re a gardener who’s not already on the scheme you can apply to join any time from now via our garden waste web page and you could start getting collections sooner,” said Assistant Director Operational Services, David Walker.

“At just over £2 per collection, it’s cost-effective and an eco-friendly way to recycle your garden waste.”

And David added:

“Last year our crews collected 2, 357 tonnes of garden waste which was made into compost.

“Let’s see if we can recycle even more this year!”

Weeds which come through thick and fast can all go into the green bin to be recycled, as can hedge clippings and grass cuttings and even rabbit and guinea pig bedding.

The Council has been sharing eco-friendly gardening tips for early summer.

They include leaving areas of lawn uncut for wildflowers to come through, checking hedges before clipping in case of nesting birds and collecting water in water butts ahead of dry spells.

The period covered by the £41 annual subscription is from 3 July 2023 to 28 June 2024 and there are no collections from over the winter from 4 December to 4 March.
