Residents interested in finding out more about future plans for Nelson are invited to attend a community event on Tuesday 14 March.

The free event is the third in a series of Community Assemblies organised by In-Situ - a Pendle organisation involved in the arts, community engagement and ecology - as part of the £730,000 arts and culture programme This is Nelson.

It’s one of seven projects backed by the Nelson Town Deal Board as part of a £25 million Government Towns Fund for a brighter future for Nelson.

This latest Community Assembly will be held at the Unity Wellbeing Centre on Vernon Street, off Railway Street, from 6pm to 8pm.

Paul Hartley, Head of Organisation and Engagement at In-Situ, said:

“We’re keen for local people to find out more about exciting programmes we are running and to get involved in our This is Nelson scheme.

“Our Community Assembly get-togethers are informal, friendly and open for all to come along to, whatever people’s experiences of community or creative projects,” he explained.

Anyone curious can simply pop along, have a chat and a bite to eat and enjoy meeting new people from across Nelson, Pendle and beyond who are all committed to exploring new ideas for Nelson.

Children's activities will be provided for over-5s at the event and if anyone has accessibility requirements please get in touch with In-Situ.

And on Saturday 18 March, artist Michael Powell will be hosting a mapping workshop inviting people from Nelson to draw a map of how they use the town centre and what the town centre means to them.

Drop in from 11am – 1pm at the This is Nelson Hub in the Building Bridges building at 20 Scotland Road, opposite the Pendle YES Hub.

Councillor Mike Goulthorp, Deputy Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said:

“We are keen to encourage people to come to these sessions where new ideas are welcome.”

“This is Nelson has the potential to improve the town in so many ways.
“It will improve health and wellbeing through activities in open spaces, including our parks and will reinforce the town’s role as a key service centre for the needs of the community.”

Stephen Barnes, Chair of the Nelson Town Deal Board, echoed Councillor Goulthorp’s words, adding:

“This is Nelson will have a major impact on Nelson town centre and our local community as well providing new opportunities for people in Pendle.

“These community events are vital building blocks in developing plans which will have a positive impact on Pendle, improving the quality of life and prospects for local people.”
