Pendle marks the one-year anniversary of Russian invasion

On Friday 24 February the Ukrainian flag will be raised at Nelson Town Hall to mark the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Staff and councillors will join the national one-minute silence that day at 11am.
In total, 41 families have settled in Pendle since the Ukrainian Settlement Scheme began and there are currently 27 households being sponsored in the borough.
14 households have moved on positively with help from the Council to secure rehousing locally, been re-matched to another sponsor, found accommodation themselves or decided to return back to Ukraine.
Councillor Nadeem Ahmed, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “We’re deeply saddened by the ongoing situation in Ukraine.
“As we mark the anniversary of the conflict, we continue to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
“Pendle has a proud history of welcoming people at times of crisis. We’re a strong community which can pull together and support others in times of need.
“Many have shown true community spirit and welcomed Ukrainian families into their homes.
“We’re raising the Ukrainian flag to send a clear message of support, especially to those who have chosen to make Pendle their home in the past year.”
The Government’s national moment of reflection offers the UK the chance to pay tribute to the courage of the Ukrainian people and demonstrates the UK’s unwavering solidarity with the country.
