“You can make a difference by recycling more this festive season,” announced Councillor Nadeem Ahmed, Leader of Pendle Borough Council.

“We do generate more rubbish at this time of year,” he admitted. “But the good news is, a lot can be recycled and does not need to go to waste!

“From cardboard boxes and empty plastic chocolate tubs to wrapping paper which is too torn to be reused - so long as it doesn’t contain foil or is plastic coated.

Environmental Services Manager David Walker added:

“We have teamed up with Alupro,  a-not-for-profit organisation which represents the UK’s aluminium packaging industry, to promote foil recycling.
“And we use a lot of foil over the festive season!

“Don’t forget if you can scrunch it and it stays scrunched, the foil can go into your brown bin, this means chocolate wrappers and mince pie foil cups can all be recycled.

“And used foil and foil containers can be rinsed and recycled in the brown bin – they do not have to be perfectly clean,” explained David.

Pendle people are also being reminded that ALL bin collection rounds will change from Monday 26 December for two weeks.

David said:  “Please check your recycling and waste calendar to make sure you put your bin out on the right day.”

Details of the changes are also on the Council’s website: www.pendle.gov.uk/bankholbins

“If you’d like a lie in, you can put your bin out the night before,” explained David.

“But please remember to park considerately to allow room for our bin wagons to get through on bin days,” he stated.

“Your neighbours won’t thank you if their bins don’t get emptied because you blocked access!”

The Council understands that people will have extra recycling and are sharing top tips including:

•    To create more space in your bin take the tops off bottles, carefully squash them and put the lids back on before recycling them.

•    Squash cans too – if you can do so safely!

•    If you have a spare old green recycling box you can put additional clean cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles and plastic food pots, tubs and trays in and put it out next to their brown bin.

Please don’t put glass jars or bottles or cans in a plastic bag at the side of your brown bin where they could be a hazard.

•    Extra paper and card for recycling can be put out in an old cardboard box next to the blue bin - but don’t put cardboard packaging from expensive gifts out where it can be seen!

•    You can also put any plastic bottles, tubs and trays and foil for recycling in a separate bag next to your brown bin on collection day, too.

The crews will empty any plastic bags with plastic bottles, plastic pots, tubs and trays and leave the plastic bags under bin handles for people to reuse or dispose of.

Local residents who have extra waste can visit the Household Waste Recycling Centres at Burnley and Barnoldswick.

They are open as normal except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, see our website www.pendle.gov.uk/recyclingandrefuse for opening times.

“And once the festive season is over, real Christmas trees can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centres and put in the green waste skip,” added David.

“If you don't want to recycle your tree, you can put it out with your normal waste on your collection day,” he said.
