Following yesterday’s sad announcement of the sad death of Queen Elizabeth II, Pendle is paying tribute to her.
 
His Worship the Mayor of Pendle, Councillor Yasser Iqbal, said:

“We are deeply saddened by the death of our monarch and our thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family.

“Local people can join with us as we honour the Queen’s steady leadership during a 70 year reign of momentous change - and share our sadness as the nation grieves.”

Pendle people are welcome to pay their respects as the Mayor makes his official proclamation on behalf of King Charles III at the cenotaph outside Nelson Town Hall and Nelson Library on Sunday 11 September at 4pm.

“And local residents are invited to join us as we observe the nation’s two minutes’ silence at 11 am on the day of her funeral on Monday 19 September at Nelson cenotaph,” stated the Mayor.

After the proclamation, union flags will be flown at half-mast on Council buildings -  Nelson, Colne and Brierfield Town Halls and Barnoldswick Civic Hall - throughout the period of National Mourning.

National Mourning will continue until the end of the day of the State Funeral on Monday 19 September.

Pendle Borough Council Leader, Councillor Nadeem Ahmed said:

“We are honouring her dedication to our nation and we grieve together.

“If you would like to leave flowers as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth, please take them to a cenotaph in your area, or display them in a window at home.

“We’re encouraging Pendle residents to share their memories and feelings in books of condolence or to post a message online,” he said.

Leaders of all political parties at Pendle Borough Council have expressed their deep sadness following yesterday’s announcement.  

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of the Labour group said:

My deepest condolences to the Royal Family and all the British people.

“For decades she has been an embodiment of everything that makes Britain truly great.

“Queen Elizabeth II was the world’s most recognisable head of state during an extraordinarily long reign.

“She guided institutions through modern times using timeless virtues like duty, dignity, and sacrifice and she will be missed and remembered all over the world. 

Councillor David Whipp, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Party for Pendle said:

“Her Majesty the Queen has been a constant presence for almost all of us, throughout our lives.

“She will be sadly missed!”
