The Ukrainian flag will be flying over Nelson Town Hall tomorrow (Wednesday 24 August) to mark Ukraine Independence day.

It’s being raised to show the Council’s support to the Ukrainian people and marks exactly six months since Russia’s invasion and 31 years since Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Councillor Nadeem Ahmed, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: “We’re deeply saddened by the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

“We stand with all those affected and we are proud to mark this important day to show our solidarity.

“Pendle has shown time and time again that we’re a community which can pull together and support others in times of need.

“Many have shown true community spirit and welcomed Ukranian families into their homes and communities.”

Anyone wishing to support Ukraine Independence Day is asked to display a sunflower, Ukraine’s national flower, and use hashtags #SunflowersForUkraine and #StandForFreedom if posting on social media.
