Seven of Pendle’s fantastic parks are raising their prestigious Green Flag Award.

The parks which have retained the prestigious Green Flag status are Ball Grove Park in Colne, Barrowford Park, Heyhead Park in Brierfield, Marsden, Victoria and Walverden Parks in Nelson and Valley Gardens in Barnoldswick.

The award is for being welcoming places with eco-friendly environments including great natural habitats for wildlife.

Councillor Nadeem Ahmed, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said:

“This announcement is a credit to hard working staff, park friends groups and people who help out on volunteering days.

“We are very lucky to have so many wonderful parks here in Pendle with great facilities such as playgrounds, cafes, picnic areas, free tennis and bowling.

“You can find out more about our green spaces on Pendle Council’s website - www.pendle.gov.uk/parks."

Phil Riley, Pendle Borough Council’s Green Spaces Manager, said:

“We are indebted to people who volunteer in our local parks, helping with tree planting, creating wildflower meadows, organising events, litter picking and more…

“Work by volunteers this year has included getting funding for a new path around the marsh garden at Walverden Park, as well as planting new trees there.

“The Green Flag inspectors were very positive about our rewilding and differential mowing introduction in our parks, which has allowed for greater biodiversity and habitat creation for pollinators.

"We’re always encouraging more residents to come forward and volunteer a little of their time to help us continue to provide these wonderful spaces”, Phil added.

Commenting on the news that seven Pendle sites have met the Green Flag Award standard, Keep Britain Tidy’s Accreditation Manager Paul Todd said:

“I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making Ball Grove, Barrowford, Heyhead, Marsden, Valley Gardens, Victoria and Walverden parks worthy of a Green Flag Award.

“They are vital green spaces for the community in Pendle.

“This award is testament to all the hard work of staff and volunteers, who do so much to ensure that it maintains the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award,” stated Paul.
