And it’s not too late to sign up - as David Walker, Pendle Borough Council’s Environmental Services Manager explains:

“The gardening season of long days and sunshine continues, so we’re reminding people who’ve forgotten to pay the annual fee that they can still re-join.

“Gardeners can join online via www.pendle.gov.uk/gardenwaste and anyone not on the scheme but who would like to see if we can add their address can find out on our website.”

The period covered by the £37 annual subscription is from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.

There are no collections in December, January and February as the Council found that few people used the service over the winter.

“At just over £2 per collection, it’s a cost-effective and eco-friendly way to recycle your garden waste,” said David.

And he added:

“Please check what you can and can’t recycle in your green bin by visiting our garden waste webpage.

“On www.pendle.gov.uk/gardenwaste you can also find eco-friendly gardening tips for high summer and drought conditions.

Nelson gardeners, mother and daughter Hannah and Molly Brighton, have been helping the Council to promote the scheme.

And they’re appreciating having a green bin more than ever, now they’ve moved house.

“We have used our green bin to tidy up our new garden.

“All the weeds are going in the green bin!”

Council leader, Councillor Nadeem Ahmed said: 

“I’d like to thank all the Pendle gardeners who recycle their garden waste through our popular green bin scheme, helping us reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfill.

“Last year our crews collected over 2,800 tonnes of garden waste which was made into compost – an increase of 12% on the previous year.

“Let’s see if we can recycle even more garden waste this year!”
