£2m funding for manufacturers given the green light

A £2m cash injection to support the Nelson manufacturing sector has been given the go-ahead by Pendle Borough Council.

Councillor Nadeem Ahmed, Leader of the Council said: “The Business Resilience and Growth Project was granted approval by the Council as part of an ambitious ten-year plan for our town.”

It is one of eight projects being backed by the Nelson Town Deal board as part of a £25 million new towns fund which has been won for Nelson.

The Business Resilience and Growth project will provide grants of up to £100,000 per eligible business for new machinery, initiatives to lower CO2 emissions or energy consumption and building improvements to support growth.

Mike Williams, project lead and Pendle Borough’s Tourism & Economic Development Officer, said: “If we get the go ahead from the Government for this project, it will open up opportunities for jobs, skills development, entrepreneurship and clean, eco-friendly sustainable growth.

“Although the project is yet to receive final Government approval - which we hope to hear about in late summer, we’re keen to hear from any Nelson manufacturing businesses that have potential projects that could be supported.”

The project will also include additional business support via Growth Lancashire which has committed to providing around three hours of business support, advice, or follow-on guidance to each organisation that receives a grant within the first 18 months.

Stephen Barnes, Chair of the Nelson Town Deal Board said: “The benefits of these grants will be felt more widely as new machinery and adapted premises will boost productivity across the region and decarbonisation projects will result in energy savings and cleaner air.

“The Nelson Town Deal is a once in a generation opportunity for Nelson and our wider area and this project will help to make a big difference for a more sustainable economy.
