This Saturday 14 May, the Steven Burke Sports Hub is hosting a Summer Jam of cycling activities to inspire more locals to get into the sport.

The all-day event will include sponsored rides, fun coached taster sessions and the Go Ride race at the closed-road cycle circuit behind Swinden Playing Fields.

Over at the BMX pump track – across the bridge from the circuit – there will be dedicated women-only riders and beginners-only sessions in the morning. The afternoon slot will be a free for all!

Here is a full breakdown of the times of each session, which can also be found on the accompanying Summer Jam poster.

Cycle Circuit activities:

  • 9:30 am to 4 pm – Try-a-bike sessions (bottom end of circuit)
  • 9:30 am to 12 noon – Sponsored ride (top end of circuit)
  • 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm – Fun coached sessions (top end of circuit)
  • 3 pm – Go Ride race

Pump Track activities:

Manny Bashah, Pendle Panther’s coach and keen local rider, said:

“We’re really excited and proud to be celebrating another year of the pump track’s existence - four years this year!

“We want to encourage as many local people as possible into our wonderful sport, especially women and beginners who can both enjoy the pump track to themselves on Saturday morning.”

Pendle Borough Council Leader, Councillor Nadeem Ahmed said:

“We are keen for people to try out our excellent cycling facilities.

“Even if you haven’t picked up a bike in years or tested your skills on a pump track before, come along and give it a go. It’s the taking part that counts!”

Bikes are available to borrow for the early morning women only and beginner sessions at the pump track but there is a limited number.

There are also bikes for the try a bike sessions on the closed road circuit.

There will be a cake and samosa sale and a raffle on the day with lots of top prizes.

All donations will go directly to Sarcoma UK, the bone and soft tissue cancer charity, who helped one of the club member’s parents before they sadly passed away this year.

Tricia Wilson, who co-ordinates cycling initiatives for the Council, said:

“We are always looking for ways to inspire people from Pendle to take up the sport, regardless of age, gender or ability level.

“This year’s Summer Jam is yet another opportunity to show off the fantastic cycling facilities we have in Pendle based at the Stephen Burke Sports Hub.

“For anyone who can’t come along this weekend, don’t forget that the cycle circuit is available to book via our website, and the pump track is free and open for all to enjoy!”

If you’re interested in attending the Summer Jam, the Steven Burke Sports Hub is located at Swinden Playing Fields near Barrowford and can be easily accessed from Wilton Street, BB9 8PU.
