Carole Taylor, Pendle Council’s Waste and Recycling Co-ordinator said:

“Letters are going out from this week until early May reminding gardeners to sign up  for collections from 1 July, as their paid collections finish at the end of June.

“People who’ve opted to go paperless had an email reminder in March,” she added.

Carole, who lives in Pendle and is on the Council’s garden waste scheme herself, said:

"Now that we have put the clocks forward an hour we have longer days for us to get out and garden.”

Gardeners can pay their annual fee anytime from now until the deadline of 10 June if they’d like to continue using their green bin from 1 July and not miss any collections.

The current scheme ends on 30 June.

The period covered by the £37 annual subscription is from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023 and it’s easiest to pay online using a debit or credit card www.pendle.gov.uk/gardenwaste

“At just over £2 per collection, it’s a cost-effective and eco-friendly way to recycle your garden waste,” added Carole.

“There are no collections in December, January and February as we found that few people used their green bins over the winter,” she explained.

Higherford resident, Fiona Ritchie has been on the scheme for the last six years.  She said:

“I find our green bin extremely useful as we have a lot of trees around our home and garden, so there are always leaves, weeds and twigs to collect!

“Having a green bin enables us to keep on top of these garden chores throughout the spring, summer and autumn.

“It also saves us from having to make time-consuming trips to the tip!”

Gardeners not already on the scheme can apply to join any time from now via Pendle Council’s website: www.pendle.gov.uk/gardenwaste and if they do it soon they can get extra collections for free!

David Walker, Pendle Council’s Environmental Services Manager, said:

 “There are over 8,000 gardeners on our garden waste scheme and I’d like to thank them for doing their bit for Pendle and the environment.

“They are helping us to reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfill.”

And David added:

“Last year our crews collected over 2,800 tonnes of garden waste which was made into compost – an increase of 12% on the previous year!”

Gardeners on the scheme are also being asked to check what they can and can’t put into their green bin by visiting the Council’s website www.pendle.gov.uk/gardenwaste

Eric Phair the Council’s Landscape Maintenance Parks Supervisor shared some gardening tips for late spring:

“Treat your lawn to some spring fertilizer.  It will help the grass to rejuvenate ready for summer.

“As the weather is starting to warm up in mid-April it’s important to keep on top of the weeds! 

“But as people will know from the recent snow, hail and ice, there is still a chance of late frosts, so check forecasts daily and protect any tender plants and fruit blossoms.

“This month you can start sowing annuals and hardy herbs and wildflower seed outdoors.

“And don’t forget your containers and pots will benefit from some feed to ensure plants thrive over the summer months,” he added.
