The three charities chosen by Pendle’s former Mayor and Mayoresses, Councillor Nawaz Ahmed, his wife Mrs Azmat Ahmed and daughter Uzma were Pendleside Hospice, The Royal British Legion  (Nelson and District) and Help for Heroes.

Councillor Nawaz Ahmed who completed his mayoral year in May said:

“I had a very interesting year and I can’t believe it went so fast!

His final fundraising event, an overnight vigil outside Nelson Town Hall, raised over £2,400.

Representatives for their chosen charities came to Nelson Town Hall to receive their cheques this week.

Helen McVey, Pendleside Hospice’s Chief Executive said:

“We’re very grateful for the donation which will be used for patient care which we provide free of charge to local people.

Christina Cope, Fundraising Manager for the Hospice said:

“We had fantastic support from Cllr Ahmed who had some great new ideas to raise money.

“We were particularly inspired by his overnight vigil,” she said.

Janice Taylor, Treasurer for the Royal British Legion (Nelson and District) came to the cheque presentation with Poppy Appeal leader Christine Sutcliffe, said:

“Pendle’s Mayor has been a great supporter of the British Legion.

“It’s fantastic to get the donation, part of which will help us extend our branch offices in Barrowford.”

Fundraising will continue with the new Mayor and Mayoress Councillor Rosemary Carroll and her friend, former Pendle councillor Carol Belshaw Goulthorp.

The Mayoress will lead fund raising efforts for Pendle’s Samaritans, based in Nelson, Pendle Dogs in Need, Pendle Women’s Refuge and Homestart, a local charity supporting families of young children and teenagers in need.
