Over 8,000 gardeners on Pendle’s garden waste collections are being reminded to put their green bins out soon.

Pendle Borough Council’s popular fortnightly collections start again from Monday 28 February.

So gardeners on the scheme are being urged to check their recycling calendars, fill their green bins and get them out on the right day.

Council Leader, Councillor Nadeem Ahmed said:

“We know it’s hard to believe, with the wind and rain we’re experiencing, but spring is just around the corner!

“We’d like to thank all the gardeners who’ve continued recycling by storing their garden waste in their green bin through the winter.

“It is an eco-friendly scheme and last year we collected over 2,800 tonnes of garden waste which was made into compost - an increase of 12 % on the previous year,” he added.

Carole Taylor, the Council’s Waste and Recycling Co-ordinator said: “Gardeners on the scheme can check what they can and can’t put into their green bin by visiting our website www.pendle.gov.uk/gardenwaste

“New subscribers who are not currently on the scheme can also go to our website and sign up now to get an extra four months of collections for free,” she explained.

Keith Higson, who manages the Council’s Gardening Services Team said:

“With longer days coming and some welcome signs of spring, people will be spending more time in the garden.

“Jobs for February include dividing of bulbs such as snowdrops and daffodils to plant in other areas of the garden.

“Winter flowering shrubs that have finished flowering will need pruning and now is the time to put fresh compost into your containers and pots to help growth.

“And you can put twigs and small branches which have come down during the storms, into your green bin,” he added.
