Have your say on protection orders for Pendle’s parks and sports grounds

Public spaces clean, dogs on lead

Do you use parks or sports grounds in Pendle?

If so, Pendle Council is keen to hear from you as part of a month long consultation period which ends on Friday 3 December.

Councillor Nadeem Ahmed, Leader of Pendle Council said:

“We’re working to keep public spaces clean and safe for everyone to enjoy.

“This includes keeping dogs out of certain areas - including children’s play areas - to keep these places safe and clean for people to use.

“The Protection Orders put in place three years ago, following public consultation, are up for renewal for a further three years,” he explained.

“That’s why we are asking anyone who uses our parks or sports grounds to have their say.”

Tim Horsley, Pendle Council’s Community Protection Co-ordinator said:

“If you use any of Pendle’s parks or sports grounds or play areas please visit www.pendle.gov.uk/communitysafety and click on Public Spaces Protection Orders for details.

“We know that our parks and green spaces are important for dog walkers, so the restrictions on them have been kept to a minimum.

“Dogs are only banned outright from specific areas such as children’s playgrounds,” he added.

People who’d like to comment on the Public Spaces Protection Orders can email comments to: asb@pendle.gov.uk or phone 07969 885265.

The current Protection Orders also includes a ban on dogs at multi-use games areas (MUGAs), tennis courts, bowling greens and skate parks.

This to protect people from the problem of dog fouling.

In the current Protection Orders, dogs have to be on a lead no longer than 2 metres most sports pitches and on car parks, for the safety of people, dogs and drivers.

Dogs are banned from a number of sports grounds in Pendle including the Steven Burke cycle track and BMX pump track and areas like the Earby Recreation Ground.

Dog walkers can be asked to show that they have a way of picking up and properly disposing of their dog's poo.

Other restrictions in parks include rules on barbecues, a ban on smoking in children's play areas, multi-use games areas, tennis and ball courts and a ban on camp fires and overnight parking,

There is a new proposal to add Blacko Park to the list of areas where dogs are not allowed.

Pendle Council also wants to make it an offence to fail to provide a name and address or to give a false name and address when asked by an authorised officer or agent of Pendle Council.

Anyone not complying with Protection Orders can be issued with a fixed penalty notice of £100 or be prosecuted by Pendle Council.

Once the public consultation period is over, the proposed renewal and new proposals will go to Pendle’s Area Committees and Policy and Resources Committee in January 2022.
