Three lucky winners in the We Love Nelson Treasure Hunt have won cash prizes totalling £600.

“The competition was designed to encourage local families to come back safely to shop in Nelson town centre,” explained Mike Williams, Pendle Council’s Tourism and Economic Development Officer.

The treasure hunt involved a dozen local businesses, including Going Dutch florists, Althams travel and Jean Junction.

Businesses displayed unique posters in their windows which shoppers had to identify to win one of three cash prizes.

The campaign was supported by The Welcome Back Fund with help from the European Regional Development Fund and the Government’s Reopening High Streets Safely initiative.

The winners of the competition, who are all from Nelson are:

Maryum Nasar of who came first, winning £300.

Junaid Hussain in second place, who won £200.

Wayne Thompson in third place, winning £100.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Nadeem Ahmed said:

“Covid-19 has had a big impact on town centres and places like Nelson had to cope with additional restrictions at the height of the pandemic.

Now that most restrictions have lifted, this competition gave us an opportunity to encourage people back to support local businesses safely.

“We are continuing to ask people to take care as Covid-19 is still with us.

“This includes wearing a face covering in crowded and enclosed settings where you come into contact with people you don’t normally meet,” he said.

Peter Boast of Going Dutch commented:

“It’s been a really tough time for local retailers and it’s great that Pendle Council has involved the town’s businesses in promoting the town.

“Anything like this which brings more people back to our high streets is a good thing,” he said.

Pendle Council’s Nelson Area Committee supported the initiative and the Chair, Councillor Naeem Ashraf said:

“We will continue to do all we can to support the great businesses in our town and get across sensible messages about safety.

“Stay loyal to our town!

“You can make a big difference and help our businesses recover by shopping locally,” he added.

Mike Williams said:

“In September and October we’ll be getting in touch with Nelson town centre businesses in to promote them for FREE on a new Nelson & Brierfield town centre website.

This new initiative is also being funded by the Welcome Back fund.
