Young people urged to get vaccinated against Covid-19

Pendle teenagers aged 16 and over are being encouraged to get vaccinated to get back to doing the things they love.
Councillor Nadeem Ahmed, Leader of Pendle Council, said: “It is encouraging to see our young people taking advantage of the first dose vaccines now available to them.
“It marks another positive step to freedom!”
Sophie Butterworth, of Blacko, is 16 and has had her first dose. A keen dancer at Sandersons, Nelson, Sophie was keen to get back in the studio doing what she loves most.
She said: “I really missed my school and dance friends during the long periods of lockdown and it feels amazing to be back in the studio – I’m there almost every day!
“Having the vaccine has made me more confident to go out and do all the things we took for granted before and I feel I am doing my bit to protect myself and others from the virus.
“And being able to go on holiday abroad was amazing!”
Lily Molloy, 17, of Barnoldswick, has had to shield during much of the pandemic due to health reasons, and she had no hesitation in having the vaccine.
She said: “I’ve spent a lot of time at home over the last 18 months and really missed seeing my friends both in and out of school.
“Being vaccinated has given me the confidence to start doing these normal things again; I’ve even been abroad on holiday!”
Usman Muhammad, 18, of Nelson, is doing Track and Trace work for the NHS until he starts university in the autumn and has been vaccinated himself.
The Nelson and Colne College student successfully got high grades in his A levels and will be studying medicine at the University of Liverpool.
Usman has taken part in a number of Pendle Council’s Covid-19 campaigns to help get across safety messages including the importance of getting vaccinated.
His parents have been proud to see his image on a bus shelter, on social media and now, larger than life, on a billboard.
“I’ve 100% enjoyed being part of the campaigns and hope that it provides some reassurance to others my age about getting vaccinated,” he said.
Barkerhouse Pharmacy, Nelson, is now offering first dose Pfizer vaccinations to 16 and 17-year-olds.
Drop-ins are taking place 9.15am - 6pm Monday to Friday and 9.15am - 5pm on Saturdays.
