Pendle Council pays tribute following the death of long-standing councillor

Tributes have been paid following the sudden death of Councillor Tony Greaves on Tuesday 23 March aged 78.
Councillor Greaves represented Waterside ward in Colne for Pendle Council.
He was also a life peer and a Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords.
Before his time on Pendle Council he was a councillor for Colne Borough Council and he was a member of Lancashire County Council for 25 years.
Councillor David Whipp, Deputy Leader of Pendle Council and Leader of the Liberal Democrat group, said: “I was deeply shocked and saddened to hear of Tony’s death.
“We have worked together for many years and he was very passionate about politics and representing the views of local people.
“He was a thoughtful, honest and principled man who wanted to make a real difference to people’s lives – he was a people’s champion!
“I will miss my friend and colleague and I know he will be sorely missed by many.”
Councillor Mohammed Iqbal MBE, Leader of Pendle Council, added: “I would like to pay tribute to the hard work and dedication Tony always showed when representing Pendle Council.
“He was a very active and committed ward councillor and he was a great advocate for Pendle as a member of the House of Lords.
”His heart and passion was for the people of Pendle.”
Councillor Nadeem Ahmed, Leader of the Conservative group, added: “We are all deeply saddened by the news of Tony’s death.
“My heartfelt condolences go out to Tony’s family, including his wife Heather, daughters Vicky and Helen, and grandson Robin.”
