Pendle Council is supporting the National Day of Reflection which marks the anniversary of the UK’s first lockdown and remembers those who have sadly lost their lives during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nelson Town Hall’s flag will by flying at half-mast and the Council will be observing a minute’s silence at 12 noon tomorrow (Tuesday 23 March).

Councillor Mohammed Iqbal MBE, Leader of Pendle Council, said: “It’s so important that we take this time to reflect on the past 12 months – one of the most difficult and challenging periods for so many of us.

“Pendle, like areas up and down the country, has been badly affected by the pandemic and too many lives have been lost.

“Please join us in observing the minute’s silence at 12 noon and then at 8pm light up your doorstep to remember those who have sadly lost their lives.”

The National Day of Reflection has been created by end of life charity Marie Curie Cancer Care and has the backing of the Government.

To keep everyone as safe as possible, residents are being encouraged to mark the minute’s silence safely by following the current restrictions, rather than gathering at Nelson Town Hall.

Councillor David Whipp, Deputy Leader of Pendle Council, added: “So many of us have been affected by this incredibly challenging year in different ways.

“It’s important that we take this time to reflect and show solidarity, in particular for those who are mourning loved ones.

“We don’t need to gather together to do this. Please keep each other safe and observe the minute’s silence from wherever you are.”

Councillor Nadeem Ahmed, added: “One way or another we’ve all been affected by the pandemic.

“The National day of Reflection is an opportunity to take some time to look back on the past 12 months, remember those we’ve lost and look ahead to a more hopeful time.”
