Have your say on Pendle’s town and parish councils

Published: Monday, 8th March 2021

Pendle Council is preparing to launch a Community Governance Review to ensure that the borough’s town and parish councils reflect the needs of their local communities.

This comes after the Local Government Boundary Commission review which decided there will be 12 electoral wards from May 2021 as well as changes to wards of some parishes.

Philip Mousdale, Pendle Council’s Corporate Director, explained: “The role of town and parish councils has developed significantly in recent years and many have taken on services and facilities from Pendle Council.

“A review is an opportunity to ensure effective community governance is in place, so that town and parish councils can make full use of their powers and responsibilities.

“We also have a legal duty to ensure that they are reflective of the identities and interests of the community in the area and can effectively provide services for residents.”

Between now and the end of April, Pendle Council is asking town and parish councils, local residents, groups and organisations, to give their suggestions for changes (including no change) they would like to see considered in the review.

Philip added: “We will publish details of all suggestions received.

“A working group of Pendle councillors will consider them and put forward a set of draft recommendations for public consultation as appropriate.

“The group will then consider the detailed results of the public consultation and make final recommendations to a meeting of Pendle Council.

“Following the decisions of the Council we will make the necessary legal Order and take the steps required to implement them.”

The deadline for initial suggestions for the Community Governance Review is Friday 30 April 2021.

If you'd like to put forward any suggestions, email philip.mousdale@pendle.gov.uk or write to Philip Mousdale, Corporate Director, Town Hall, Nelson, BB9 7LG.
