Last Saturday (19 December) the Government announced that it could no longer go ahead with plans to ease restrictions for five days because of soaring Covid-19 rates.

Councillor Mohammed Iqbal MBE, Leader of Pendle Council, said: “I know it’s so disappointing for everyone who was looking forward to getting together over the festive period.

“But it’s clear that Christmas can’t go ahead as planned because the virus is spreading rapidly, particularly in the south.

“It’s been a tough year for everyone and we know how important this time is but please look after each other.

“It’s vitally important we pull together and do all we can to protect our loved ones.

“Please don’t be tempted to carry on with any plans you had to get together with your Christmas bubble, except on Christmas Day.”  

Councillor David Whipp, Deputy Leader of Pendle Council, added: “This is devastating news for people who thought they could see light at the end of the tunnel and my heart goes out to everyone.

“Please, please take care of yourselves and your friends and families by minimising your contact with people outside your household, particularly indoors.

“The more people you mix with, the more chance the virus will spread.

“We need to get a grip of this virus to save lives and protect the NHS, which is already under a great deal of pressure.”

Councillor Nadeem Ahmed added: “This is disappointing news and a big blow to all those who made Christmas plans.

“But we need to be aware of what is happening across the country and take steps to protect ourselves.

“If you’re in any doubt as to whether you have Covid-19, get tested before coming together with any other households.”

Pendle Council is reminding residents to stay safe by taking some simple steps:

• If you’re using public transport take hand sanitiser with you, wear a face covering and keep 2m from other passengers not in your household or bubble.
• Open two windows to keep your house ventilated and reduce the risk of the virus spreading indoors.
• Avoid hugging and shaking hands with anyone outside your household or bubble.
• Remember to wash your hands, clean surfaces and contact points, like door handles, regularly.
