Extra time for shopping in Pendle

Christine, our Car Parking Attendant with a message that you won't need to display your disc at Council short stay car parks after 2pm to help people shop for longer.
“We’re going into extra time in a bid to boost local businesses during the festive season,” announced Councillor Mohammed Iqbal MBE, Leader of Pendle Council.
“Shops have been able to re-open this week and it’s good news that they can stay open later in the run-up to Christmas and in January, too.
“This national decision will give our shops a much-needed boost,” he said.
The new rules, which run from Monday to Saturday, aim to make shopping more pleasant and also safer by avoiding crowds and creating less pressure on public transport.
“We are doing our bit to give people extra time for shopping, too.
“You will not have to display your parking disc from 2pm through December” explained Councillor Iqbal.
Normally people would have to display a parking disk up to 6pm.
“And don’t forget parking is free in Pendle,” he said.
Christine Hunt who has been a parking attendant – known as a Civil Enforcement Officer – for 13 years, including seven in Pendle said:
“I think it’s a good idea. It will encourage people to shop locally.”
The Council has produced new videos to promote local businesses which can be seen via the Council’s Facebook and Twitter sites and also on Pendle Council’s Youtube channel.
“We’re also sharing support your local towns and businesses campaigns including Colne Bid’s Click & Collect in Colne where you can explore Colne’s virtual high street online.
And Visit Lancashire is encouraging people to shop locally in the run up to Christmas with its #ShopLancashire campaign.
A number of Pendle businesses have already signed up to it, including Deerstones Bakery and Live Like the Boy.
Councillor Iqbal added:
“Our local shops have had a really tough time and many of them have found new ways to keep their businesses going.
“Please support them! By shopping locally we can make a huge difference,” he said.
