The new calendars are being delivered by hand to 40,000 homes between now and 30th November.

Councillor Mohammed Iqbal MBE, Leader of Pendle Council said:

“We’re urging people to keep their calendar in a safe place when they get it, so they know which bin to put out and when!

“The calendars include any changes to collections over Christmas and New Year,” he added.

The leaflet also shows people what they can and cannot recycle in their brown and blue bins and advice on how to dispose of any bulky waste safely and without breaking the law.

For gardeners on the green bin scheme which runs from 1 July to the end of November 2020 and 1 March to 30 June 2021, the leaflet shows which kinds of garden waste Pendle Council can collect for recycling.

“Thanks to changes at Lancashire County Council’s plant which our recycling goes to, we’ve been able to recycle clean plastic food pots, tubs and trays over the last year,” he explained.

“People have been recycling more than ever before during the lockdown earlier this year and now under the current national restrictions,” said Councillor Iqbal.

"We’ve recycled an extra 585 tonnes in the six months from April to Sept 2020 including 168 tonnnes of paper and card and 417 tonnes of cans plastic and glass compared to April to Sept 2019.

“It’s important for our environment that people recycle it right and recycle more – which is why the new calendar is called Pendle recycles,” he said.

Carole Taylor Pendle Council’s Waste and Recycling Co-ordinator said:

 “Please keep your calendar on your fridge door or somewhere handy where you can check details when you need to.

“We’re using the calendars to remind people that they can recycle clean plastic food pots, tubs and trays,” she explained.

“The plastic chocolate and biscuit tubs people give at Christmas can go into the brown bins – once they are empty!” 

“And the plastic trays which hold mince pies can also go into the brown recycling bins, too, along with clean foil containers,” she added.

“Don’t forget to remove film or cling film lids first and any absorbent bottoms from food trays as these need to go into your grey refuse bin.

“And please don’t put plastic bags into your recycling bins,” said Carole.

“Pendle people have a vital part to play in helping us to recycle it right,” she stressed.

“Pendle recycles over 10,000 tonnes of waste per year which would otherwise end up in a landfill site.

"And thanks to being able to recycle more plastic during the last year, the amount we recycle is increasing,” said Carole.
